The program is coordinated through the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce, with project leaders from Broome Community College , Broome-Tioga BOCES, and local business and industry leaders.

Building Bridges Goals

To provide on-site exposure of educators to the particular competencies required at selected work settings.

To generate ongoing interaction between employers and educators toward appropriate and promising preparation of students for employability.

To consider the extent to which “learning for earning” should be part of the curriculum at different levels of formal education.

To explore ways to foster workplace behaviors and competencies through regular academic subjects at all levels of education.

BCC Technology Careers Program

Inform area educators and employers of Tech Careers program.

Determine area opportunities for employment and current needs.

Identify competency-based skills required by area employers of new hires with a 2-yr degree.

Offer services to Educators to create projects to coordinate coursework and technology.

Increase employer awareness of BCC students & their skills.

Increase educators’ awareness of BCC programs as pathways to employment and careers.

Building Bridges Process

Each session runs for five weeks.

Participants include educators, counselors, school administrators or other personnel, and area businesses or industries. There are three facilitators who coordinate the activities and run the meetings.

Each week, the educators make an organized visit to one business. The visit includes an orientation, tour of the facility and structured meeting to share impressions, information and opportunities for students within this industry.

The participants have the opportunity to share, inform, comment and discuss any aspect of the program through this wiki, which serves as the program's "home base" and repository for information related to our Building Bridges experience.

The final session is a wrap-up and review, giving participants an opportunity to share lessons learned and strategies for bringing those lessons back to the schools.

Building Bridges History

"Building Bridges" has been developed from a reseach project by Dr. Tom Broussard of Brandeis University. Successful Building Bridges Programs have been completed in the Bangor Region and Waldo County, Maine. Building Bridges program was introduced to the Greater Binghamton area in 2008 by Catherine Glover, former CEO of the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce.

Attached below is a pdf with directions to the BOCES Education Center at 435 Glenwood Road, Binghamton. Enter via the first driveway on the left. You will see a large BOCES sign on the front lawn. Students will be on hand to direct you to a designated parking area. Enter the builidlng and give your name for the checklist. (for security purposes). Our hosts will escort you to the Board Room to assemble before we divide into three groups for the tours.

Notice that there is NO ACCESS to the factory from Route 11, you must use the highway overpass to reach the entrance to Spud Road.

Visiting the Frito-Lay factory means following very strict food-safety rules. Please take the time to review the requirements and plan accordingly.
Wear flat-soled, closed-toe shoes! Note especially that NO JEWELRY IS ALLOWED! Please come prepared by leaving your valuables at home.

New York State Learning Standards NYS Education Department

The Skills Imperative: How Career and Technical Education Can Solve the U.S. Talent Shortage (2008) U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for a Competitive Workforce has published a white paper on career and technical education (CTE). This report outlines the economic context of CTE, the opportunities for the business community to get engaged, case studies and examples where CTE is part of a skill-attainment solution, next steps and recommendations, and further resources for CTE information. A new education and training system with more integration of CTE and core academic courses will be necessary to adequately prepare students for the challenges of their postsecondary training programs. Preparing Today's Youth for the Workplace, this article was presented by Kenneth Adams, President and CEO of The Business Council of New York State on May 28, 2008 to the Senate Committees on Education, Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business, Agriculture and Labor . It is a great article on how our educational system, P-16, should be aware of local and regional economic trends. Business leaders need to help our students understand what skills are needed to be successful in the workplace. A copy of the article in pdf format is attached below.

Are They Really Ready to Work? "What skills are necessary for success in the workplace of the 21st century? And do new entrants to the workforce, graduates of high school, two-year and four-year colleges have those skills? These and other questions were posed in a survey of human resource professionals mounted in the spring of 2006 by The Conference Board, Corporate Voices for Working Families, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills and the Society for Human Resource Management. It is our hope that through our combined resources, reputations, and strong member bases that the business community, educators, policy makers, students and their families will listen to what employers collectively think of the new workforce in America. The results indicate that the U.S. is not doing enough, fast enough, to prepare for a vibrant economic future for our children and our nation..."

Generation Y: Here They Come, Ready or Not. Generation Y makes up over 70 million people in the U.S. With those born between 1977 and 1994 included, they make up over 20% of today’s population. The largest generation since the baby-boomers, the Millennials are defined by their numbers. They will have a huge social and economic impact...This paper examines who Generation Y is, their attitudes, and how to recruit and retain the next generation.

Majority of Youths Found to Lack a Direction in Life. The majority of our young people do not have a clear purpose in life due to a variety of factors. The author suggests more intervention by teachers and parents to examine what youth enjoy doing and to point them into the correlating career direction. In addition he discusses how there is too much emphasis on testing and not enough emphasis on guidance in the school system.

Career Programs Stress College Too, And Give Students a Leg Up, Study Says. This New York Times article published on June 26, 2008 by Erik Eckholm discusses how to train students in careers while still in high school. This concept is entitled career academies. These academies give students experience in the workplace while still studying in high school. Many of the students profiled continued their education after high school in some of the careers that they explored in the academies.

We hope to give participants the opportunity to make the connections and gain the insights that you'll achieve. The program has much to offer you, and in turn, your involvement will contribute in many important ways to the continuation and success of the program.

In the seven weeks of our program, we'll be visiting area businesses, ending with a touir and "focus group" at Broome Tioga BOCES. Each week, we'll have a three-hour site visit to a host business. A company representative will present an orientation to the business,lasting about one hour, then we'll have an in-depth guided tour of the facility - an opportunity to see the workplace in action.

After our orientation and tour, we'll meet for a facilitated discussion of what we've seen and learned, and how we can make this relevant to our students.

The essential ingredient of Building Bridges is Sharing Information - about yourself, about the businesses, about your schools and about your thoughts.

Please review our "Ground Rules" - Pretty simple, but so important!

For our site visits, you should be at the site, ready to start at the designated time, so be sure to give yourselves time for parking and finding your way. We have so much to cover in our short time together, being on time is essential!

Expect to do some walking and standing for part of the visit. Wear shoes that will be confortable. Some sites have safety restrictions for footwear, so please do not wear sandals, high heels or open-toe shoes.

Our hosts will provide some light refreshment during the visit.

A few sites have special requirements for visitors. We'll send out instructions beforehand, so be familiar with them and comply with our host's requests.

Building Bridges Participants,

I would like to welcome you in advance to Lockheed Martin Systems Integration-Owego. We are looking forward to our meeting on Wednesday, 10/22, and we are confident it will be a great exchange of information between our business and your schools.
In order to help facilitate your visit here, I wanted to send directions to the facility and our check-in process. Also, a note: We will be taking you on a walking tour of our facility, so please be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
We are encouraging everyone to arrive by 12:15pm, in order to get through our check-in process prior to our 12:30pm start time, since we have a full agenda.
Directions
From Route 17 West:

Take exit number 65 toward RT-434/RT-17C/OWEGO - .1 mi
Turn right onto NY-17 access road - .2 mi
Take the RT-17C ramp and over the viaduct - .3 mi
Turn left into the Lockheed Martin drive
Once you turn onto the Lockheed roadway, proceed to the Visitor's Booth (far right lane) - you will need to check in there. You will then proceed to the main lobby - after exiting the booth and getting back on the main roadway, bear to the right and then bear to the left at the intersection (head towards the flag pole). We have arranged parking for you in our visitor's lot, so proceed just past the lobby and go in to the gated lot on the right-hand side, which is just past the end of the main building. From there proceed back to the lobby entrance and check in with the receptionist to get your badge. We will have people in the lobby to meet you.

We will have beverages available at the start of the meeting, and beverages and light snack after our tour.

so we can all share in a productive and collegial program.

Attend the sessions

Be prepared - Read the materials, check the wiki, do your homework

Be on time

Contribute - Share your thoughts, opinions and ideas, participate in the discussions

Be Present – No side conversations, phone calls or texting during the meetings - turn your equipment off!

Be Polite – Listen with an open mind, disagree with respect, don’t interrupt or talk over each other, never make a personal attack

Stay positive – make constructive comments, be respectful in on-line discussions

Be Focused - follow the agenda, stay within the time limits

For each Building Bridges session, there are important surveys to be completed. Survey responses will be analysed, with reports shared via this wiki. Data will be retained at the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce.

Required surveys per session

1. Educator Participants Pre-assessment

Purpose: Assess participant’s level of knowledge of area businesses, career opportunities, impact in the classroom
Format: electronic distribution / email
Process data: electronic compiling
Quantity: One-time to each Educator Participant
Time-frame: Complete survey on-line at orientation session
Disposition: Hold for final report / archive

2. Business Participant Profile

Purpose: Provide overview of business, including needs, skills and opportunities for employment
Format: electronic distribution / email
Process data: electronic compiling
Quantity: One-time to each Educator Participant
Time-frame: 1 month before first session / Send out, complete, compile
Disposition: Distribute to all Educator Participants prior to site visits.

3. Program Attendance Record

Purpose: verify attendance for CEU, participation numbers
Format: chart or form on laptop or paper
Process Facilitator takes attendance at each site visit
Quantity: one chart
Time-frame: At each site session
Disposition: Facilitator collects. Data compiled at end of program.

4. Educators’ Site Visit Debriefing / Feedback

Purpose: Collect impressions, learning experience, questions & comments
Format: paper survey
Process distribute at each site visit
Quantity: one survey to each participant
Time-frame: At each site session / distribute & complete (OR EMAIL)
Disposition: Facilitator collects. Data compiled at end of program

5. Business Site Evaluation

Purpose: Review & summarize experience, appropriateness to program.
Format: electronic survey
Process Facilitator completes after visit
Quantity: one survey for each site
Time-frame: After each site session
Disposition: Facilitator collects. Data compiled at end of program

6. Educator Participants Post-assessment

Purpose: Evaluate impact on participants
Format: electronic distribution / email
Process data: electronic compiling
Quantity: One-time to each Educator Participant
Time-frame: Following last site visit, prior to Wrap-up/ Send out, complete, compile
Disposition: Hold for final report / archive

7. Group Wrap-up - All Participants

Purpose: Evaluate success, effectiveness, meeting expectations, identify problems or issues, collect suggestions
Format: electronic distribution / email
Process data: electronic compiling
Quantity: One-time to each Participant (businesses, educators, facilitators, others)
Time-frame: Immediately following graduation / Send out, complete, compile
Disposition: Hold for final report / archive
